In Evolution
Thirty years ago I started my career in the arts as a multi-percussion player and drummer with a passion for improvisation and experimentation, and a keen interest in various forms of contemporary artistic expression. While this still forms an integral part of who I am, along the years I also became increasingly invested in the use of sound, both in its pure and raw aspect, as well as in manipulated forms, which I put into practice through solo works, and through compositions and collaborations with choreographers, visual artists and filmmakers amongst others.
In 2004, I was invited for a five-week residency at the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) in Belfast, made possible by Arts Council Northern Ireland and British Council Northern Ireland. SARC offered a unique opportunity to immerse myself within a stimulating and challenging sonic arts environment, and through collaboration with composers / academics Michael Alcorn and Pedro Rebelo, I embarked on a journey of discovery that led to the expansion of my artistic language. The result of this collaboration was the creation of the sculptural performance/project ‘Sounds Unlimited’ (2004), that brought together the resonance of found objects, the collection of field material, laptops, and my experience as improviser and sound collector.
For several years following the SARC experience, I immersed myself in readings and works that dealt with soundscapes, acoustic ecology, noise and silence, and experimented with the use of sound in diverse situations. It also led to a Master of Arts in Sound Arts (Oxford Brookes University).
Sound has great meaning to me, and the sonic environment that surrounds us is a primary source of raw material that not only sets the tone of my work, but is a powerful source of inspiration. Sound Migrations documents my ongoing sound journey and artistic practice within the world of sound art, offering a space through which I can share my passion for field recording, sound collection, composition and sound design, and their application in installations, live performances and music for film/moving image that I create. Through my work, I seek to bring about a deeper sensorial engagement between listeners / audiences and my work, be it in public spaces, performance venues, film, gaming applications, art galleries and museums.
