Between the Heard
Sound Installation
2016 Duration: 22 minutes |
Between the Heard is a sound installation designed as an audio sculpture emitted from 5 speakers in the round that invites members of the public to listen in to Valletta, Malta's capital city. It captures the mood and movement of the city through sound, pushing people to reconsider their perceptions and experience of Malta’s capital city.
Through this piece I felt that I could focus more upon the relationship between sound with the environment that surrounds us, merging emotion and imagery triggered through sound with memory and familiar landscapes. This work is based on incidental conversations and sounds captured around Valletta, Malta’s capital city. Experiencing the city purely through sound opens up many possibilities. As sound travels through space, connecting and rewriting it, we are invited to ask: What happens to the city when instead of being seen and inscribed, it is heard and allowed to flow? Time and space are reconfigured both in real life and through the art piece.
I placed myself in between all that could be heard and collected material from different parts of the city. Through the way in which I layered the sounds, I wanted to challenge the level of awareness of, what most locals would classify as, a familiar sonic environment. The circular format of the five speakers invited visitors to listen and to engage emotionally and personally. Each speaker carried an individual role; standing in the middle, one could absorb the sum of the five speakers, while moving closer to and around them, one was invited to discover more detail.
This work was launched on the 23rd December 2016 at St James Cavalier, Centre for Creativity, Valletta (Malta).
