Artistic Practice

Multiple Disciplines

Renzo Spiteri is a multi-percussionist, drummer, field recordist, sound artist, composer and improviser whose work sits at the intersection of performance, sound art and multimedia installation. His creative practice is a journey into the heart of sound, where the boundaries between the human, the cultural, and the natural blur.

Over the years, he has developed a deeply immersive practice that blends acoustic instrumentation, field recordings, and electronic processing into richly textured, multi-sensory environments, bringing about deeper sensorial engagements between listeners and his work, be it in public spaces, performance venues, film and art galleries. 

Awards

International Recognition

Winner of the 2025 Royal Television Society Craft and Design Award (Sound- Non-Scripted) and a 2025 Emmy® Nominee (Outstanding Sound - Documentary) for the film Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story, produced by Silverback Films for National Geographic and Disney+.

His contributions to the arts have earned him recognition as one of Malta's leading contemporary artists, with a passion for pushing the boundaries of creative expression.​ Renzo was artistic director and creative producer of the Malta World Music Festival (2016-2018) with a remit leading to Valletta Capital of Culture 2018, and in 2008 he was appointed Malta’s national ambassador for the EU’s Year for Intercultural Dialogue.

Live Events

An acclaimed musician and performer with over three decades of international performance experience, Renzo has performed as a soloist, collaborator and improviser across genres ranging from  world music, jazz and free improv, to classical, and experimental work.
 
He has performed on stages and festivals in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including Royal Festival Hall (London), United Nations Headquarters (Geneva),  Sonic Arts Research Centre (Belfast), Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington DC), SOTA (Singapore), Nordic Music Days (Faroe), Festival of the Desert, PASIC, amongst others.

Artistic Partnerships

Beyond the concert stage, Renzo's collaborative spirit has brought him into creative interdisciplinary partnerships with contemporary dancers and choreographers, visual artists, spoken word artists, film directors and theatre professionals across the globe, creating immersive sonic environments. His ability to adapt and respond to various art forms has made him a sought-after collaborator in multidisciplinary projects, where music and movement, sound and visual art intersect.

Specialisation in Sound

Renzo specialises in field recording, sound collection, composition and sound design, and their application in installations, live performances and sonic material for film/moving image.

He has a profound engagement with natural phenomena, particularly with the sea and coastlines, and his work often involves a symbiotic relationship with the natural world, turning landscapes and seascapes into co-creators in his artistic process.

Outreach Events

With a Master of Arts (with distinction) in Sound Arts and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Music, Renzo has cultivated a rich and diverse foundation in the world of sound and music.

As an educator and mentor, Renzo leads outreach programmes, workshops and masterclasses that inspire young musicians and artists to explore sound in unconventional ways.
